Current population

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) releases estimates of the resident population (ERP) for Australia and the states and territories on a quarterly basis.

The following estimates are based on the results of the most recent Census of Population and Housing, conducted in 2021.

The estimated resident population at 31 December 2024 was 1,891,6701, an increase of 4,264 people over the quarter since 30 September 2024.

For the year ended 31 December 2024:

  • South Australia’s population increased by 20,673 at an annual growth rate of 1.10%
  • Australia’s growth rate over the same period was 1.78%
  • net overseas migration (NOM) was the main contributor, with a gain of 19,546 persons
  • natural increase (NI) contributed 2,709 persons
  • net interstate migration (NIM) saw a net loss of just over 1,580 persons.

At 30 June 2024, 1.469 million people were living in the Greater Adelaide Capital City region (GCCSA), accounting for 78.2% of South Australia’s population*.

In the 12 months to 30 June 2024, the Greater Adelaide population increased by 22,125 persons at a growth rate of 1.53%.

Over the same period, the population of regional SA increased by 2,914 persons to 408,848, at a growth rate of 0.72%.
